JOB SUMMARY: Provide life skills support and assistance for SVSU and Delta students formerly in foster care; recruit and train peer mentors; supervise part-time assistant life skills coaches; develop and maintain research and data from the program.
This position requires management of crisis situations, some work hours outside of normal business hours and occasional weekend work.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: Identify and assess students' needs if the youth is approved by the Department of Health and Human Services for services.
Prepare, with the youth's assistance, an individualized service plan based on the assessment that outlines the youth's strengths and specific goals.
Advise and support youth in all areas of life skills, including, but not limited to: assistance with housing, employment, education, budgeting/financial management, identifying/maintaining appropriate relationships, career planning, parenting, medical/mental health, finding community resources/funding, and accessing Youth in Transition (YIT)/Education and Training Voucher (ETV) funding.
Establish working relationships with appropriate and relevant campus departments and community partners to access services for youth, and assist youth in moving toward self-sufficiency within both campus and community environments.
Develop a written plan to administer Specific Assistance funds to eligible youth for emergency needs, or needs as a result of goals established in the service plan.
Assist youth to secure basic needs, such as housing, utility costs, food, and clothing, as needed.
Provide eligible youth crisis counseling and intervention.
Keep in regular contact with eligible youth, such as social networking, phone calls, face-to-face meetings, texting, etc.
Provide support and encouragement to youth utilizing group settings such as, but not limited to, educational and recreational activities.
Provide trained mentors who are educated and/or employed in the area of study of the eligible youth.
Oversee mentors and develop specialized training for mentors to ensure awareness of the needs and issues of eligible youth in a post-secondary institution.
Develop and administer a survey to eligible and participating youth to measure the program's effectiveness.
Perform other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED: N/A MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: The Life Skills Coach must possess a master’s degree or a bachelor’s degree with at least five years of experience, in one of the following human services areas: social work, sociology, psychology, family ecology, consumer/community services, family studies, human services, family and/or child development, guidance/school counseling, counseling psychology, or criminal justice.
The Independent Living Skills Coach must be clinically, and trauma trained and have experience in crisis response and conflict resolution.
Strong interpersonal skills, organizational, verbal and written communication skills.
Experience with children and young adults in foster care, knowledge or understanding of the specific needs that foster youth encounter when entering college.
Valid Driver’s license and reliable independent transportation required.
Experience and ability to positively interact with diverse student populations and groups.
Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without accommodation.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Duties are generally performed inside and not exposed to adverse conditions.
Work may require exposure to adverse conditions.
