We have one Chippendale meat serving tray and one smaller Chippendale serving tray with a cover.
This 3 piece Chippendale set was purchased by our parents at a Pawn shop in Chicago in the mid 1950’s.
We have no idea how old they were at the time of purchase.
The set is 70 years old for sure and could be much older.
Note the patent on these items is dated 1904.
The large Chippendale meat serving tray has a “drainage tree” and a collection “cup” in it’s bottom.
The tray is 18 7/8 inches long and 11 3/4 inch wide, There are four small legs about 1 inch high on the tray’s bottom.
The tray edges are 1 5/8 inches high at the sides and about 2 inches high at the long ends.
There are detailed engraving in all four sides of the 2 inch wide border of the tray.
There is a narrow (1/4 inch wide) detailed edging around the tray.
There is a inch long “melt” damage to this edging.
The “stamped info” on bottom of this tray reads: CHIPPENDALE EPNS PAT.
1914 18 IN (plus some symbols) Photo #1 shows the large tray Photo #2 shows the engraving and edging on one end of the large tray Photo #3 show the bottom of the large tray The detailed engraving and the detailed edging match each other on all three of these items.
The smaller Chippendale side dish serving tray has a cover.
This tray is 12 inch long and 8 inch wide and 1 3/8 inch deep.
With the cover in place it is 2 3/4 inch high.
The engraving pattern is on all four sides of the serving tray.
The detailed edging goes around the entire rim of this tray.
The cover has engraving pattern on its two sides and the detailed edging around its top.
There are two nonmetallic “buttons” on each cover handle to reduce heat flow to the handles.
You can remove the top without burning your fingers - see photo #6.
The “stamped info” on bottom of the tray reads: CHIPPENDALE EPNS PAT.
1914 12 IN 20.
(plus some symbols) The number “20” is also stamped inside the cover.
Photo #4 the side dish serving tray and its cover Photo #5 shows the engraving and edging on one end of this tray Photo #6 a close-up of the “insulated” handles of the tray cover The symbol “EPNS” on these items mean they are made of “Electro Plated Nickel Silver”.
A thin layer of pure silver has been electro plated on each of these 3 items.
The base metal does not contain silver.
We live in Midland and will sell these three Chippendale items for $70, cash.
We have other antique serving trays, etc listed on Craigslist at this time.
