gov/1412/Current-Job-Openings* *Purpose and Scope* Under supervision of the landfill superintendent, an employee in this class operates, cleans, lubricates, services and assists in repairs to all heavy motorized equipment as needed to maintain roads, shoulders, ditches, storage areas, landfill and other areas; for moving gravel, stone, earth, sand, rubble, snow, ice and various other material; and performs related work as required.
*Examples of Job Duties* _The following is intended as a brief description/illustration of the duties, responsibilities, and requirements of this position and are not intended to be all encompassing or all-inclusive.
_ Drives, operates and maneuvers a crawler tractor bulldozer, of various sizes, and auxiliary attachments to clear land areas, remove trees, stumps, rocks and other objects, level off and move masses of earth, debris and rubble, plow snow and ice, backfill ditches, sewer trenches and other excavations; rough and fine grade, roads, storage areas, parking lots, landfill and other areas; assist in removal of stuck or mired equipment.
Operate and maneuver a motor grader of various sizes and auxiliary attachments to rough and fine grade roads, storage areas, parking lots, landfill and other areas, build sub and finish grades on various projects; do conventional grading, blading, smoothing and floating; grade and construct road side ditches, backfill, grade high bank slopes, outslopes and shoulders, plow snow, windrow and move ice and snow in streets, roads, parking lots, and other areas.
Operate and maneuver a front-end loader, of various sizes, and auxiliary attachments to scoop, move and load gravel, stone, sand, rubble and snow; dig ditches, culverts and other excavations; backfill and level terrain; lift, load, unload, move and handle heavy objects, material and supplies as necessary.
Operate and maneuver hydraulic backhoe, elevating scraper, landfill compactor, and other excavating equipment of various sizes, necessary for excavations and backfilling on various projects; lifting, loading, unloading, moving and handling of heavy objects, materials and supplies; and performs other related work as required.
Makes minor repairs and adjustments to equipment and assists in changing tires and mounting attachments.
Assists mechanics with major repair work on heavy motorized equipment.
Performs as instructed and directed such work as dismantling, cleaning, repairing, renewing, installing new or replacement parts and components and assembling and connecting heavy equipment mechanisms and linkages; refuels, services, lubricates, washes, cleans, and flushes out equipment as necessary; and maintains proper housekeeping and safety practices.
*Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities* Graduation from high school or the General Education Development Test (GED) equivalent; and one year's experience in the operation and maintenance of light automotive and mobile equipment.
Knowledge of heavy motorized equipment operation and maintenance; ability to proficiently operate heavy equipment and auxiliaries; ability to work industriously without immediate supervision; knowledge of street and highway traffic rules and regulations; mechanical knowledge and ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions; ability to concentrate for long periods of time.
*Other Requirements of the Job:* Must possess, upon appointment, a Class A CDL license with an "N" endorsement.
Visual acuity, good driving record, and possession of a valid State motor vehicle operator's license.
*Physical and Mental Demands:* Must be able to perform a wide variety of strenuous physical labor, including heavy lifting in excess of 50 pounds.
Ability to ride and operate heavy machinery for extended periods of time and perform work with repetitive motion.
Must be able to use a variety of manual and automated tools/equipment.
Must be able to stoop, balance, reach, climb ladders and navigate through uneven terrain.
Must be able to understand directions and safely work with chemicals and a variety of potentially dangerous equipment.
Ability to perform basic mathematic computations such as calculating area, volume, etc.
Ability to read and understand blueprints and drawings.
Must be able to detect wok area safety hazards visually and by sound.
Job Type: Full-time Pay: $22.
